Are you applying to your dream university?
Are you looking for an SOP solution?
Will you write it yourself?
If yes, then you might want to know some tips on how to write an SOP.
SOP writing requires a balance of language and knitting of exciting words to keep the reader engaged. Often, students underestimate the importance of SOP. They copy and edit SOP from seniors or take a sample from the internet. It reduces the chances of admission and does not fulfill the primary purpose of an SOP.
The primary purpose of an SOP is to explain the admission committee’s importance and relevance to the course you want to pursue.
The person sitting to evaluate your SOP is experienced. It’s mere foolishness to believe that he/she will not understand the level of efforts or seriousness put by the applicant.
How to write a compelling SOP?
- Weave a story
When given an option in reading a novel or a factsheet, it’s undeniable to choose a story(Novel). Humans always like stories as compared to facts. Stories keep us engaged. It would help if you tried to frame your SOP in a story format. Instead of conventional writing, “I am XYZ, and I am applying for the ABC course.” use something relevant to yourself, which breaks the ice instantly about why you want to apply for a particular course or university.
- Add numbers or figures.
It’s important to quantify, numbers, and data add authenticity. Our education system has always measured everything in numbers. So if you share a piece of information like this one:
“I completed my graduation and started teaching in NGO for some time to help poor kids get quality education!”
The above piece is good, but it doesn’t explain many details.
It can be rewritten as “I completed my graduation in 2018 and soon took up a job as a teacher in NGO. Teaching there for eight months was an enriching experience.”
The period detail modifies the information conveyed.
- Don’t fill in jargon.
Yes, it would help if you told everything about yourself but never fill too much jargon. Be specific and practical about everything. Avoid empty sugar coating words like “I want to find my inner self,” “It’s my dream university.” and so on.
Every reason you give for taking up the course or joining the university should be backed up by durable logic. Always try to convey the change or upgrade the course or university will bring in your life.
- Avoid slang and flashy language.
Keep it official and not so flashy. Use simple fonts and avoid slang as it’s official documents. Slangs appear very casual, and it’s not a casual purpose.
- Explain your hurdles
We want all shiny and bright sides highlighted, but it’s not fair. Hiding failures won’t help because the admission committee might interpret the gap or omission in the wrong way. For example, if you don’t have good grades in a semester or have a back paper record, then the committee will want to know why.
No reputed university expects a lousy degree or back paper candidate for admission.
Explain the hurdles and how you overcame the problems. Honest exposure will bring more trust and strength to your profile.
SOP is not just an essay to be submitted with the application form. It’s a map guiding you to your dream university. You need to carve it well to reach the right destination!
