Terrorism is the extension of a person’s inner intentions and beliefs. It takes base in the personal attitudes which manifest themselves in a form of behavior towards others. As such, it would be useful to understand the psychology of a terrorist in order to battle terrorism in general, and find ways of dealing with such a critical issue.

Attitudes of a person play an important role in self-esteem and further development of a person. The relation between the concepts and the response must be closely analyzed to determine the most important criteria people’s actions can be judged by. One of the reasons people choose to become terrorists is personal belonging, self-worth and hatred. Usually, there are some deep psychological traumas that people have suffered, so they want to get back at the world and other people for their misfortunes. This can be described as a cognitive limitation which leads to a block in reasoning. People who are in such mental state are easily manipulated to believe ideas of others. In this case, persuasion is used and is one of the key points in making an individual believe an extreme philosophy of “battling” innocent people. This is an important concept in the modern world, and the numerous techniques lead to new ways and abilities people have in relation to others. An example of the interaction between attitude and behavior in terrorism can be seen in the views on life in general. People might have thoughts against evil deeds that they commit, but the society continues with the process. The belief in a higher purpose justifies their reasoning. The strong persuasion of terrorist leaders and the person’s devastation are supported by moral beliefs, and lead a person to view their actions as one-sided. It is obvious that the fixation on own problems and pain blinds people of considering the feelings of others.

The psychoanalytic theory proposes several ways to explain violence. Specifically, there are social and personal factors. A person’s upbringing, the beliefs of their family members and own psychology – all have an influence on the future decisions. If the family is extremely religious, a person might become a blind follower, and religion will become one of the reasons an individual commits terrorist acts.

Another theory is titled frustration aggression as it takes a form of a person being constantly frustrated with own life and that of others. This might be because there are personal limitations, inability to fit in with the greater society or personal acquaintances. Psychology has long tried to pinpoint the definitive and singular reasons for human behaviors and attitudes. There are very many common variables, but each individual is unique in the end. Mimicking others is one of the links in an enormous chain of individuality that makes up each person. As such, social influences play an important role in the process of becoming a terrorist. It is very true that proximity of individuals with common beliefs heightens the sensitive nature of interaction within the human world. This gives a person a closer look and comparison in regards to own personality and wants. If others share the want to destroy nations and countries, then a person does not feel alone in their ideas and can find a common purpose in the actions of others.

Since the reasons for terrorism are both personal and social, the ways of battling the terror must also focus on the person’s individuality and their surroundings. The belief system of a person who is devastated must be rebuilt in order for them to create another goal in life. For someone who has lost close friends or relatives, the want of revenge can take up their minds completely. Psychiatric therapy might be used, so that the person gets a sense of belonging to society and finds a way of contributing to the nation and local community. It has been established that the surrounding environment and the people that someone comes in contact with play a significant role in one’s beliefs, so it would be reasonable to remove a person from the surrounding which led them to become aggressive. A criminal group can be broken apart by lawful authorities closely monitoring their actions and plans, so that it does not come to the point of carrying out their actions. This suggests a negative nature of closeness and relation between people. But, an important point is that humans are social beings, and cooperation, together with mutual dependence and help are inevitable, so it would be effective for the whole society to keep a watch and report any suspicious behavior.

There are many reasons for people to choose extreme ways of dealing with life and its short backs. It is the reality of every individual, but while some people find ways of coping with the pain, others decide to inflict it onto others. It becomes clear that people will always compare themselves to their environment and its circumstances which will lead to new efforts and imagination of each individual and the collective humanity. Another confirmation of inevitable violence is that it is present throughout societies and nations. This shows that repetition of seen behaviors is one of the simplest forms of action evident in all of nature. Even though it might seems difficult to root out violence, especially in the form of terrorism, individuals and groups of people determined to hurt others must realize that their actions are pointless and will not lead others to believe false morals which are the reasons for such acts.
